Review of Fang Xiangjun’s Lecture: Perceiving the Beauty of Faith through Classics

Update:2026-04-27

On March 26, 2026, Fang Xiangjun, former Vice President of Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute, delivered a lecture titled Perceiving the Beauty of Faith through Classics at Nanjing University, offering an in-depth analysis of thematic painting. He explained that classics embody the spirit of a nation, and that Chinese painting integrates philosophy and brushwork, possessing dual value. Drawing a contrast between Chinese and Western cultural traditions, he emphasized that thematic creation must adopt a contemporary stance while preserving truth, simplicity, and conciseness.

Fang further noted that artistic creation in the new era requires cultural confidence and the integration of the Two Combinations. He called for upholding the spirit of freehand brushwork and a grand, upright style. Before the lecture, he reviewed and praised students’ works, and concluded by sharing his personal motto, encouraging the youth to root themselves in tradition, immerse in life, and depict the era through brush and ink. The lecture, hosted by Professor Liu Delong, provided both theoretical and practical inspiration for the faculty and students in attendance.
