This lecture will provide a systematic classification and review of materials related to laquer from the Warring States to the Qin-Han era, along with an overview of current research frontiers, in order to facilitate future scholarly inquiry. The Warring States, Qin, and Han eras represent a golden age in the development of Chinese laquer, marked by distinctive innovations in vessel forms, craftsmanship, and iconographic themes. Moreover, the production and circulation of laquer were closely intertwined with the emergence of regional styles. By examining the visual connections between laquer and artifacts made from other media, this lecture will also explore the intellectual and conceptual frameworks prevalent during this period.
